Lost and Found Pets

Found a Pet?

  • Report the found animal on Indy Lost Pet Alert and Pawboost
  • Post a clear picture of the pet, where it was found and your contact information on NextDoor or your neighborhood or area’s Facebook Pages
  • Take it to the nearest vet clinic to be scanned for a microchip.
  • Create large, waterproof colorful signs for the entrances of your neighborhood or closest intersections to where you found the pet. Clear contact paper or clear packing tape works well to make it waterproof.
  • Please do not make assumptions about the pet or its owner as it may have been on its own for some time.
  • Ask for proof of ownership (such as vet records, pictures, etc.) for the pet’s safety.

Lost a Pet?

  • Search your neighborhood.  Call the pet’s name.  Bring your pet’s favorite toys along and make them squeak or treats and rustle the treat bag.  Stop regularly, be quiet and listen for your pet.
  • If you are missing a cat, look under bushes, junk, sheds, etc. Also, put their dirty litter box on your porch or a covered area.  You can also put out a cat carrier with your pet’s bedding (should still have their scent on it).
  • Talk to your neighbors and give them a flyer (see below)
  • Share his/her information and a clear picture on your neighborhood, area, or town Facebook pages.
  • Share his/her information and a clear picture on nextdoor.com.
  • Share his/her information on Indy Lost Pet Alert and Pawboost.
  • If you pet is microchipped, please contact the microchip company to make sure your contact information is correct and for them to know your pet is missing.
  • Post LARGE signs at closest intersections and the entrances and exits of your neighborhood. These should be large, easy to read and eyecatching.
  • Make and print colored flyers.  If you live in an apartment complex, be sure to distribute flyers and post near the mail area and be sure the office is aware.  Give flyers to your mail person as they usually know of the dogs in the area.  Also, give to your any local businesses.
  • Contact your local humane societies. Most have website with lost/found pets listed.  Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) has a stray hold of 4 days.
  • Do not give up.
